The Social Media Blackout : What it means for you and I

The Social Media BlackoutThree apps went out for over 6 hours and the whole world felt their absence,  does this mean we are gravely dependent on it? What’s the way out

When Facebook Family Apps – WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook recently experienced an outage making it inaccessible for about 6 hours.

Many social media users took to twitter to react in both humorous and serious tones.

We are happy that the apps are back and running smoothly. However, the impact of this outage also makes it worrisome how much we depend on the apps to conduct their daily lives.

3.5 billion people around the world use Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp to communicate with friends and family, distribute political messaging, and expand their businesses through advertising and outreach.

Outages like such are not uncommon, but this was exceptional. At its core, social media promises connections such that we can create rich networks of friends, be up to date with people in our lives, and build a sense of community.

But with this  downtime, one thing that is clear is users can reevaluate how they rely on social media and reinvent their efforts at making meaningful relationships with the people that matter most to them.
